Reflection on my MLC class

This week, the lecture class are great! At last, Mdm. Helena show us some video. Thank you!! I really appreciated that. The topic about Media Representation and Culture Stereotype are really interesting. Now I know what it is really about. In fact, watching the video about Media Stereotype is really open my eyes that what happen out there when they are making film by putting many stereotype which is untrue (like Muslim is a terrorist and Black is a bad people). Not only the, the video about Media Representation about the manipulation of women's body as a man gaze is really woke me up. Now I must think carefully what is happened around me especially when it is related to media..

The Importance of Media Literacy to FCM Students

As a Creative Multimedia students..we need to access, analyze, evaluate, and produce communication and information in a variety of forms and means. That's mean before we producing our media product, we need to do some research and know what we want to do from the media. All Multimedia Student must know this because in future, they will work with it and be part of it. In my own opinion, when FA students want to do their animation project, first they will find the suitable theme for it. If let say they use Greek myths, they will experiencing,interpreting/analyzing and making their media product based on the information they get. If you watch the picture which i put on above, it is the scene from Final Fantasy Advent Children. Where do you think they can made this from? They must had done many research and analyze many things before they can finalize it in media form. That's why media literacy is very important to Creative Multimedia students.

Topic 4 : Media Literacy

Media Literacy is the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, and produce communication and information in a variety of forms and means.

"Media literacy" is the expected outcome from work in either media education or media study. The more you learn about or through the media, the more media literacy you have. Media literacy is the skill of experiencing, interpreting/analyzing and making media products.

The traditional definition of literacy, when print was the supreme media format, was the ability to decode, understand and communicate in print. But the world has evolved, and print is no longer the dominant media format—that role has been usurped by the electronic media. To be literate today, people must be able to:
  • decode, understand, evaluate and write through, and with, all forms of media

  • read, evaluate and create text, images and sounds, or any combination of these elements.

In other words literate individuals must possess media literacy as well as print literacy, numeral literacy and technological literacy.

Media Stereotype

From my own experience, almost all American movie contain many typical stereotype that show how great is their people. For instant, their movies must have a good looking hero, skillful, great, and can save the world. They never fail their mission and in the end will fall in love with the beautiful girl who always help and stand by their side. However, they never used their own people as their 'bad guy'. In fact, the bad guy were often representative of the countries that were in conflict with the United States. This can be see when they put Arabian as terrorist and their face must typically like Osama bin Laden, a beard guy with robe and have full of bomb with them. Other than that, the black people always characterized in movie to be drug seller, joining gangsterism and have a bad attitude. The France people always been see as high class people but joining mafia and do illegal thing. In fact, when they want to show something about Asian, they always went to China or Hong Kong. All this stereotype are very popular in American movies nowadays.

War theme movie are usually used all this kind of stereotype. For example, Pearl Harbor and Behind Enemy Lines.

But what is attracting me is the movie True Lies by James Cameron. I found this movie was interesting and i really enjoyed watching it. However, when it comes to antagonist, they make the Palestinian as the villain. There is part where Palestinian terrorist faction, Crimson Jihad, led by Aziz (Malik) plan to detonate one of four nuclear warheads to cover their tracks while they flee with the other three and make their demands to United Stated government. This show the stereotype for Arabian in their movie. This kind of stereotype might change people perspective towards Islam's people and they also might think that all Muslim are terrorist.

Media stereotype is really dangerous especially for propaganda and political reason. Therefore, if they won't change their stereotype, it's difficult to change people perception and thought about other race and religious.

Media stereotype are a simplification of certain concept or opinion about certain racial, religious or different nation by a number of people in a form of mass media such as cartoons, caricature, movie, radio, theater, music, and comics. This can be represent like the 'black' as a 'primitive and savage' and 'white' as a 'civilized and developed'.

Review on MLC class

I'm requesting to show more video rather than do lectures only. As a multimedia student, multimedia itself can attract students rather than reading the notes. On last week class, i can't really concentrate on what Mr. Radzi Bedu said because the noise from back are really distracting me. However, I'm enjoying the topic on that day especially about the radio and the war which make people misunderstanding and panic about it.

Internet: 2nd Reflection

Yesterday, I read newspaper about technology column and I'm attracted to one of their sub topic.
"Teenagers are easily trusted to online". That is the topic. It's quite attracting me because I'm one of them too, the user of this technology and multimedia. Based on the research, there is 'network effect' on the children which is they will start using cell phone when 3 of their friends using it. It is show how influence the technology to us. And it is connected to the usage of internet. Eventhough I say that I don't trust the information in internet but I still cannot stop myself from believing it. The rumors spread wider and faster than in newspaper. Hence, either to trust it or not, it's depend on oneself.

Topic 2 :Internet

When i read this topic at MMLS, instantly i remember what Mdm. Helena said about wikipedia during lecture class Media Appreciation on 1st semester. When the students said they want to search the information at wikipedia, she said that wikipedia is *bs. I'm laughing at that time because since i came to MMU, wikipedia was like my textbook. All information were took from there. But eversince i knew that all information from wikipedia can be edited by anybody, i start to prevent myself from searching it (but until now i'm still open wikipedia). If you ask me "Do you often take what is on the Internet as truth without thinking much about it?", my answer is 50/50. Nowadays, youngster often take internet as their main source of information. It's fast and easy to find information. I'm also one of them who make internet as a main priority for researching rather than reading books or newspaper. But i did'nt trust 100% on the information because i don't sure the contain is right or wrong. However, if an official website from big organisation which is well known to the world, i trust it. for example:

www.amnesty.org
www.unrwa.org

If the website show the concrite proof that what they say is true, it can be accepted. But in this world, it is hard to find somethig which is trully can be trusted. People can change the information for their own good. Hence, i cannot say that i really trust it or i do not believe it at all.
