2nd Reflection for topic 6

When i hear my father said that people will be love to sit in front of computer, chatting, hearing music by downloading it and spend more time on it rather than going to the Rihanna's concert, it make me want to laugh. But when I think over it again, would it be people might change their lifestyle because of media? Or perhaps when the technology become highly advanced, people will just do presentation by using hologram appearance from home.

Topic 6 : McLuhan's "Tetrad of Media", Media Application and It's Media Effects

By using McLuhan's "Tetrad of Media" I will apply 4 laws in my media application or tool which is instant messaging.
" What does it (the medium or tehcnology) extend?"
If the car will be the foot, the instant messaging will be our appearance.

"What does it make obsolete?"
The car makes walking obsolete, and the instant messaging makes the social life by meeting all the people unnecessary.

"What is retrieved?"
The sense of adventure and quest is retrieved with the car and the sense of communication and meeting via maya or media is returns with the spread of instant messaging services.

"What does the technology reverse into if it is over extended?"
An over extended automobile culture longs for the pedestrian lifestyle, and the over extended of instant messaging culture makes people feels awkward when meet in social lifestyle.

In my own opinion, instant messaging like Yahoo Messenger or MSN gives many effects either it is bad or good. Since i came to MMU, I'm using YM and MSN constantly than before. Without it, i feel lost without interacting with my friends and discuss many things with them. Considering more complicated extension, instant messaging is like ourselves in one room of media and talk to each other(with friends). It allows us to communicate, view by webcam, exchage files and having conference in the same manner as we meet our friends socially, only faster, easier and with less effort. Only our "hands" talk and the output is given on the screen.

However, the extension of technology like instant messaging amputate the need for interaction with people in social lifestyle, which in turns cause people to be more passive and less meet poeple in "outside world". An amputation will be the loss of interaction skills on outside and be less social with the people. In fact, using too much short form languages in instant messeging effect the usage of language either in writing or speaking. When I'm still in school, I always hear the teachers complaint about pupils using too much short form in their essay writing. Sooner or later, the way we talk also will change when we use the short form words and it is really hard to change it. Medium is influence our lives more than the message. Hence, if we know on how to use it properly, it might change our lifestyle in more proper way.

Reflection on my MLC class

Huh,this week Mr. Radzi Bedu came late. I almost left the class but luckily he managed to come. We did not learn anything but we got 'present' from our beloved lecturer. He is giving us 2nd assignment which the topic is Role of Media in Socializing. We need to discuss the human needs that the Media help satisfy in term of the News and Entertainment. But the most painful is we need to write it in 800 words. Argh...

Topic 5 : Obscenity, pornography and indecency

The meaning of Obscenity, pornography and indecency is..

Obscenity/Obscene-
Offensive to morality or decency; indecent; depraved: obscene language. It can cause uncontrolled sexual desire. It is also know as abominable, disgusting and repulsive. In media form, obscenity which are designated in book, films and etc are found to appeal to a prurient interest in sex, be patently offensive, and have no serious artistic, scientific,or social value.

Pornography
-
Sexually explicit pictures, writing, or other material whose primary
purpose is to cause sexual arousal. The presentation or production of this material such as
women being portrayed as sexual objects who enjoy pain or humiliation, experience sexual pleasure in being raped or being presented in scenarios of degradation, injury, torture, dismembered or truncated or severed or fragmented into body parts, shown as filthy or inferior, bleeding, bruised or hurt in a context that makes these conditions sexual.

Indecency/Indecent-
The state or quality of being indecent;lack of modesty,
taste, or
propriety. It is morally offensive. For example, the exposure by a man of his naked person on a balcony,to public view, or bathing in public.

Hence, I can say that these 3 words contain sexual material even though it is in different form. In fact this material poisoning people's mind with sexual contain and cause uncontrolled sexual desire.

Reflection on my MLC class

This week, the lecture class are great! At last, Mdm. Helena show us some video. Thank you!! I really appreciated that. The topic about Media Representation and Culture Stereotype are really interesting. Now I know what it is really about. In fact, watching the video about Media Stereotype is really open my eyes that what happen out there when they are making film by putting many stereotype which is untrue (like Muslim is a terrorist and Black is a bad people). Not only the, the video about Media Representation about the manipulation of women's body as a man gaze is really woke me up. Now I must think carefully what is happened around me especially when it is related to media..

The Importance of Media Literacy to FCM Students

As a Creative Multimedia students..we need to access, analyze, evaluate, and produce communication and information in a variety of forms and means. That's mean before we producing our media product, we need to do some research and know what we want to do from the media. All Multimedia Student must know this because in future, they will work with it and be part of it. In my own opinion, when FA students want to do their animation project, first they will find the suitable theme for it. If let say they use Greek myths, they will experiencing,interpreting/analyzing and making their media product based on the information they get. If you watch the picture which i put on above, it is the scene from Final Fantasy Advent Children. Where do you think they can made this from? They must had done many research and analyze many things before they can finalize it in media form. That's why media literacy is very important to Creative Multimedia students.

Topic 4 : Media Literacy

Media Literacy is the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, and produce communication and information in a variety of forms and means.
www.unesco.org/education/educprog/lwf/doc/portfolio/definitions.htm

"Media literacy" is the expected outcome from work in either media education or media study. The more you learn about or through the media, the more media literacy you have. Media literacy is the skill of experiencing, interpreting/analyzing and making media products.

The traditional definition of literacy, when print was the supreme media format, was the ability to decode, understand and communicate in print. But the world has evolved, and print is no longer the dominant media format—that role has been usurped by the electronic media. To be literate today, people must be able to:
  • decode, understand, evaluate and write through, and with, all forms of media

  • read, evaluate and create text, images and sounds, or any combination of these elements.

In other words literate individuals must possess media literacy as well as print literacy, numeral literacy and technological literacy.
