Reflection on my MLC class

I'm really happy that this topic is our last topic. It's getting near to the end! On lecture class, Mdm Helena presents us the slide show title TECHNOLOGY & HOW IT IS CHANGING OUR MEDIA & CULTURE which i had read it before to get addition theory for my essay- assignment 2. Not only that, I'm a bit surprised when she show us the video about how a student register on a university at US by using IPhone provided by the university. It is show how influence the technology to our culture and lifestyle. And i really hope that MMU also give us chance to use that IPhone..I'm really jealous of their technology. *sigh

Is there a possibility to reshape the (new) culture today via new technology, How?

Yes, because I also feels like moving to the new culture via new technology ever since I came to MMU. Every morning, the first thing I do is to on the laptop, online my yahoo messenger and MSN and see who had already online. Then I check my MMLS and see if there is any update and also check my MMU portal. This is what I do nowadays but after I watch the video about the student from a university at US, I believe that this new culture is spreading widely. They used IPhone to register their course, completed with map, attendance details, subject details and of course, internet. They can check their Facebook anytime, downloading music, booking ticket and even talk face to face by using IPhone to computers. Can you imagine how is this monstrous internet is affecting people? It’s changing their lifestyle! Facebook is now a part of media socialization. People didn’t going out to find friends, but just by put some creativity on your facebook, people will attracted to you. The way people talk and wrote also keep changing. The short form words like LOL, OMG, ROFLMAO, DND, WTF and so on are very popular nowadays. People might see these as the language are being abuse in a wrong manner but the technology is keep changing peoples lifestyle. Who knows probably in future people will talk by using code or something like that because of the technology.

Topic 8: What kind of culture influences through technology can you see from today’s world?

From my own opinion, I can see the culture is influence through technology when there is MMU student who make the virtual reality’s project for umrah. As what I read from newspaper, the person can practice through the gadget which can show us the same situation as the real place before we do it for real at Mecca. This project got many attentions from NGO and big company such as Tabung Haji Malaysia. Not only that, we know that many cell phone company (especially Korea) put a settings that can help Muslim know when is the time to pray, where is the direction to Mecca and also disabling the incoming call for 20 minutes (give the users chance to pray). I also saw my uncle set his cell phone to do “Azan” when the time for pray is coming. This is show how influence the culture through the technology that we face today. Day by day the technology is kept updating and highly advanced.

Reflection on my MLC class

This week (week 10),I didn't come to class but i keep updating what happen during lecture with my friends. I'm quite disappointing because i missed the video that showed during lecture. Argh... However, the topic is very interesting. And i need to finish up my assignment 2 before Monday 20 April.. I'm hoping that the lecture will be more exciting with the new knowledge and interesting information.

2nd Reflection for topic 7

When I walking in the Sunway Pyramid and survey the stores, I found that most of the stores are monopoly by western brand. Only few are local brand(even i can count it by my hand). If i list all this branded stuff, maybe most of them are your favorite. But i can say that America are successfully conquer the world's fashion and it become a part of people lifestyle and culture. Even the advertising is Western in origin and offers Western products and services. Most Third World countries are more vulnerable to advertising because of fewer regulatory controls. Even though Third World are not simply be the passive recipient(India and China originate most of their own media production – their film industries have a higher output than Hollywood)but sooner or later we will lost our own unique culture because of this massiveness of media imperialism. It is like the Harrods are take over the MYDIN mall. hehe..

Topic 7 : The documentary entitled "The Power of Nightmares (Part 3 - Shadow in the Cave)" by Adam Curtis and The Theory of Media Imperialism.

Media imperialism is a theory stating that smaller countries are losing their identity due to the force-feeding of media from larger nations. It can be equated to small community shops closing down due to large superstores moving in, taking over and having a monopoly. As the larger media corporations begin to take over, smaller media companies are either being forced out or swallowed up.

http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-media-imperialism.htm

After watch the documentary and read the slide about Media Imperialism, i can relate that today, US government was spreading their "fantasy story" about terrorism by using media. We can see how powerful the media is as it can poisoning peoples mind with the information given. As fact that people are more trust on US information as United States is the world's biggest exporter of television and it only imports 2 percent in foreign programming. The dominance of the U.S. television industry is a global phenomenon. Third World countries rely too heavily on Western news sources. Hence, people were easily trust that the true terrorist who crashed the World Trade Center on 9/11 were Al-Qaeda. If you remember, on that tragic day,the news were keep showing the video of the incident to the public. They are trying to bear in peoples mind that Muslim are the one who do this terrorism. When this media imperialism happen, the true agenda of US president,Bush to attack Iraq and Afghanistan by using this reason become true. Therefore, people think that what America do to "protect" their country is a right thing to do (even though until now the true about US and Al-Qaeda are keep revealing). Well,I can say that Bush are fantasized too much about this terrorism. Nothing happen when they say that terrorism will happen at Disneyland or there is terrorism that will happen all over their country but the stupid idea that keep coming from him are really annoyed me. And people are keep panicking when hear all this news. Unfortunately, I can say that US are using media to influence people's mind about their propaganda. They are monopolize the world in term of media imperialism.

Reflection on my MLC class

As usual, Mr. Radzi Bedu came and giving lecture to us about McLuhan's Medium is The Message. Nothing unusual happen but when he tells us about Marshall McLuhan's title of his book, it's really attract me.It supposed to be Medium is the Message but the typography happen and it become Medium is the Massage. It makes me want to laugh when I hear about it but the words Massage behind it is really giving many meaning without we realize it. And one more thing, I really looking forward if Mr.Radzi Bedu or Mdm. Helena show us some video again..

2nd Reflection for topic 6

When i hear my father said that people will be love to sit in front of computer, chatting, hearing music by downloading it and spend more time on it rather than going to the Rihanna's concert, it make me want to laugh. But when I think over it again, would it be people might change their lifestyle because of media? Or perhaps when the technology become highly advanced, people will just do presentation by using hologram appearance from home.

Topic 6 : McLuhan's "Tetrad of Media", Media Application and It's Media Effects

By using McLuhan's "Tetrad of Media" I will apply 4 laws in my media application or tool which is instant messaging.
" What does it (the medium or tehcnology) extend?"
If the car will be the foot, the instant messaging will be our appearance.

"What does it make obsolete?"
The car makes walking obsolete, and the instant messaging makes the social life by meeting all the people unnecessary.

"What is retrieved?"
The sense of adventure and quest is retrieved with the car and the sense of communication and meeting via maya or media is returns with the spread of instant messaging services.

"What does the technology reverse into if it is over extended?"
An over extended automobile culture longs for the pedestrian lifestyle, and the over extended of instant messaging culture makes people feels awkward when meet in social lifestyle.

In my own opinion, instant messaging like Yahoo Messenger or MSN gives many effects either it is bad or good. Since i came to MMU, I'm using YM and MSN constantly than before. Without it, i feel lost without interacting with my friends and discuss many things with them. Considering more complicated extension, instant messaging is like ourselves in one room of media and talk to each other(with friends). It allows us to communicate, view by webcam, exchage files and having conference in the same manner as we meet our friends socially, only faster, easier and with less effort. Only our "hands" talk and the output is given on the screen.

However, the extension of technology like instant messaging amputate the need for interaction with people in social lifestyle, which in turns cause people to be more passive and less meet poeple in "outside world". An amputation will be the loss of interaction skills on outside and be less social with the people. In fact, using too much short form languages in instant messeging effect the usage of language either in writing or speaking. When I'm still in school, I always hear the teachers complaint about pupils using too much short form in their essay writing. Sooner or later, the way we talk also will change when we use the short form words and it is really hard to change it. Medium is influence our lives more than the message. Hence, if we know on how to use it properly, it might change our lifestyle in more proper way.

Reflection on my MLC class

Huh,this week Mr. Radzi Bedu came late. I almost left the class but luckily he managed to come. We did not learn anything but we got 'present' from our beloved lecturer. He is giving us 2nd assignment which the topic is Role of Media in Socializing. We need to discuss the human needs that the Media help satisfy in term of the News and Entertainment. But the most painful is we need to write it in 800 words. Argh...

Topic 5 : Obscenity, pornography and indecency

The meaning of Obscenity, pornography and indecency is..

Obscenity/Obscene-
Offensive to morality or decency; indecent; depraved: obscene language. It can cause uncontrolled sexual desire. It is also know as abominable, disgusting and repulsive. In media form, obscenity which are designated in book, films and etc are found to appeal to a prurient interest in sex, be patently offensive, and have no serious artistic, scientific,or social value.

http://www.yourdictionary.com/obscene
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/obscene

Pornography
-
Sexually explicit pictures, writing, or other material whose primary
purpose is to cause sexual arousal. The presentation or production of this material such as
women being portrayed as sexual objects who enjoy pain or humiliation, experience sexual pleasure in being raped or being presented in scenarios of degradation, injury, torture, dismembered or truncated or severed or fragmented into body parts, shown as filthy or inferior, bleeding, bruised or hurt in a context that makes these conditions sexual.

http://education.yahoo.com/reference/dictionary/entry/pornography
http://education.yahoo.com/reference/dictionary/entry/pornography

Indecency/Indecent-
The state or quality of being indecent;lack of modesty,
taste, or
propriety. It is morally offensive. For example, the exposure by a man of his naked person on a balcony,to public view, or bathing in public.

http://www.yourdictionary.com/indecency

http://legal-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/indecency

Hence, I can say that these 3 words contain sexual material even though it is in different form. In fact this material poisoning people's mind with sexual contain and cause uncontrolled sexual desire.

Reflection on my MLC class

This week, the lecture class are great! At last, Mdm. Helena show us some video. Thank you!! I really appreciated that. The topic about Media Representation and Culture Stereotype are really interesting. Now I know what it is really about. In fact, watching the video about Media Stereotype is really open my eyes that what happen out there when they are making film by putting many stereotype which is untrue (like Muslim is a terrorist and Black is a bad people). Not only the, the video about Media Representation about the manipulation of women's body as a man gaze is really woke me up. Now I must think carefully what is happened around me especially when it is related to media..

The Importance of Media Literacy to FCM Students

As a Creative Multimedia students..we need to access, analyze, evaluate, and produce communication and information in a variety of forms and means. That's mean before we producing our media product, we need to do some research and know what we want to do from the media. All Multimedia Student must know this because in future, they will work with it and be part of it. In my own opinion, when FA students want to do their animation project, first they will find the suitable theme for it. If let say they use Greek myths, they will experiencing,interpreting/analyzing and making their media product based on the information they get. If you watch the picture which i put on above, it is the scene from Final Fantasy Advent Children. Where do you think they can made this from? They must had done many research and analyze many things before they can finalize it in media form. That's why media literacy is very important to Creative Multimedia students.

Topic 4 : Media Literacy

Media Literacy is the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, and produce communication and information in a variety of forms and means.
www.unesco.org/education/educprog/lwf/doc/portfolio/definitions.htm

"Media literacy" is the expected outcome from work in either media education or media study. The more you learn about or through the media, the more media literacy you have. Media literacy is the skill of experiencing, interpreting/analyzing and making media products.

Source: Chris Worsnop, from Screening Images: Ideas for Media Education, Wright Communications. Mississauga, ON. Canada, 1994.

The traditional definition of literacy, when print was the supreme media format, was the ability to decode, understand and communicate in print. But the world has evolved, and print is no longer the dominant media format—that role has been usurped by the electronic media. To be literate today, people must be able to:
  • decode, understand, evaluate and write through, and with, all forms of media

  • read, evaluate and create text, images and sounds, or any combination of these elements.

In other words literate individuals must possess media literacy as well as print literacy, numeral literacy and technological literacy.

Media Stereotype

From my own experience, almost all American movie contain many typical stereotype that show how great is their people. For instant, their movies must have a good looking hero, skillful, great, and can save the world. They never fail their mission and in the end will fall in love with the beautiful girl who always help and stand by their side. However, they never used their own people as their 'bad guy'. In fact, the bad guy were often representative of the countries that were in conflict with the United States. This can be see when they put Arabian as terrorist and their face must typically like Osama bin Laden, a beard guy with robe and have full of bomb with them. Other than that, the black people always characterized in movie to be drug seller, joining gangsterism and have a bad attitude. The France people always been see as high class people but joining mafia and do illegal thing. In fact, when they want to show something about Asian, they always went to China or Hong Kong. All this stereotype are very popular in American movies nowadays.

War theme movie are usually used all this kind of stereotype. For example, Pearl Harbor and Behind Enemy Lines.

But what is attracting me is the movie True Lies by James Cameron. I found this movie was interesting and i really enjoyed watching it. However, when it comes to antagonist, they make the Palestinian as the villain. There is part where Palestinian terrorist faction, Crimson Jihad, led by Aziz (Malik) plan to detonate one of four nuclear warheads to cover their tracks while they flee with the other three and make their demands to United Stated government. This show the stereotype for Arabian in their movie. This kind of stereotype might change people perspective towards Islam's people and they also might think that all Muslim are terrorist.

Media stereotype is really dangerous especially for propaganda and political reason. Therefore, if they won't change their stereotype, it's difficult to change people perception and thought about other race and religious.

Topic 3: Media Stereotype

http://web.media.mit.edu/~ayah/MediaTheories/

Media stereotype are a simplification of certain concept or opinion about certain racial, religious or different nation by a number of people in a form of mass media such as cartoons, caricature, movie, radio, theater, music, and comics. This can be represent like the 'black' as a 'primitive and savage' and 'white' as a 'civilized and developed'.

Review on MLC class

I'm requesting to show more video rather than do lectures only. As a multimedia student, multimedia itself can attract students rather than reading the notes. On last week class, i can't really concentrate on what Mr. Radzi Bedu said because the noise from back are really distracting me. However, I'm enjoying the topic on that day especially about the radio and the war which make people misunderstanding and panic about it.

Internet: 2nd Reflection

Yesterday, I read newspaper about technology column and I'm attracted to one of their sub topic.
"Teenagers are easily trusted to online". That is the topic. It's quite attracting me because I'm one of them too, the user of this technology and multimedia. Based on the research, there is 'network effect' on the children which is they will start using cell phone when 3 of their friends using it. It is show how influence the technology to us. And it is connected to the usage of internet. Eventhough I say that I don't trust the information in internet but I still cannot stop myself from believing it. The rumors spread wider and faster than in newspaper. Hence, either to trust it or not, it's depend on oneself.

Topic 2 :Internet

When i read this topic at MMLS, instantly i remember what Mdm. Helena said about wikipedia during lecture class Media Appreciation on 1st semester. When the students said they want to search the information at wikipedia, she said that wikipedia is *bs. I'm laughing at that time because since i came to MMU, wikipedia was like my textbook. All information were took from there. But eversince i knew that all information from wikipedia can be edited by anybody, i start to prevent myself from searching it (but until now i'm still open wikipedia). If you ask me "Do you often take what is on the Internet as truth without thinking much about it?", my answer is 50/50. Nowadays, youngster often take internet as their main source of information. It's fast and easy to find information. I'm also one of them who make internet as a main priority for researching rather than reading books or newspaper. But i did'nt trust 100% on the information because i don't sure the contain is right or wrong. However, if an official website from big organisation which is well known to the world, i trust it. for example:

www.amnesty.org
www.unrwa.org

If the website show the concrite proof that what they say is true, it can be accepted. But in this world, it is hard to find somethig which is trully can be trusted. People can change the information for their own good. Hence, i cannot say that i really trust it or i do not believe it at all.

Reflection on my MLC class

First of all, I want to say that the way Mr. Radzi Bedu talked during lecture is too fast. Sometimes i'm blur from what he said. Hehe.. and I requesting that MLC class can show more video or movie like previous Media Appreciation class because it's too bored without it. Thank you. ^_^

Social Media - 2nd reflection

In my own opinion, social media is really affecting my life and the lives around me! It's like a part of my life. Using YM and MSN is a routine for me. I need to connect with my friends to discuss about assignment and exchange idea. Without those two software, i feel lost! Haha! Not only that, I had been connected to all friends around the world by using Friendster and Tagged. Even, one of my close net pal are from Indonesia, Philipines and Mongolia. With this social networking sites, I can share thought and interest with my net pal since I'm big fan of anime. Hence, we can discuss the rationality of certain anime or give opinion about. It's like a big forum! Not only that, some of them will comment my layout and style for my profile (Friendster) so that i know how to change it to make more better.
From this social sites, I can show my creativity to create layout, arranging picture and many more to attract users who 'visit' my profile. Being participate in this social media is a must because it can make me more broad minded as i hear 1001 opinion from my friends around the world. Moreover, the informations are keep update in anytime. Plus, this blog is also a part of social media. I'm interacting with my lecturers and my fellow friends who read this blog. You can give comment to me and rate this blog.

Social media

A category of sites that is based on user participation and user-generated content. They include social networking sites like LinkedIn or Facebook, social bookmarking sites like Del.icio.us, social news sites like Digg or Reddit, and other sites that are centered on user interaction.

searchenginewatch.com/showPage.html

Social media is software tools that use by the community to have social interaction and activity via social networking sites. From what I watch from the video, it's shows that people can share their thought and creativity through blog, Myspace, Friendster and so on. They can share with other people around the world as people always going to their site and interact with each other. In fact, they can comment it, give opinion or rate it so that the owner of the site can upgrade it or make it more better. With this media, it can give people chance to show their creativeness eventhough they are from corporate company or for own personal.
